5.31 Forecast

Morning everyone!

Thanks to all the mountain bikers who showed up yesterday to help rebuild the Whoopdee trail. Just a couple more work parties, and we’ll have a new trail for all you locals to ride after work! Thank you SDS lumber!

Windsurfers and kiters, west winds continue in light mode today. Those of you with kites or big boards and sails should have just enough this morning for water time. Marine clouds filtered into the Willamette valley overnight. However, low pressure off the coast kept strong gradients from building. We’ll see upper teens to start, fading to 10-15 or less this afternoon. If you want stronger wind, tell the upper level low to go away! Once again, there’s a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon, and those storms can make the wind do strange, unpredicatble things.

Someone just sent me a text asking if there might be 30+ winds in the desert this afternoon. Given the limited marine push and low pressure off the coast, I only see one scenario where this would be possible: strong thunderstorms, and associated winds. So... I've been known to be drastically wrong before, but I don't think we'll see any wind worth driving for this afternoon (it is of course possible there will be some thunderstorm association microbursts of wind). Doesn't mean you can't have fun chasing thunderheads today... they are already building south of Arlington.

That upper level low off the California coast moves to the Oregon coast tomorrow, for continued very light gradients and light wind in the gorge. Since winds rotate counterclockwise around a low pressure system, we’ll be directly below southerly upper flow. This is a recipe for thunderstorms, so be prepared for thunder, lightning and maybe rain and hail on Monday. I guess it’s a good thing that it won’t be windy in the Gorge, because kites and carbon masts don’t mix well with lightning.

Boaters, the Hood’s at 5.3 feet, the White Salmon’s at 4.7 feet, the Little White’s at 740 cfs and the Wind River’s at 700 cfs.

Whatever you do today, have an awesome time!
