The most important recreation news today is the encore ski weekend at Meadows. They’re open today, tomorrow and Sunday, with way-cheap lift tickets available at their website. If you can’t make the day ski shift, Skibowl’s open tonight and tomorrow night, as well as Saturday during the day. Ten inches of new snow fell this week, so the slopes should be in good shape. Go to the mountain! It’s almost the end of the season, and I know you want just one more day on the slopes. I do… I’m going… c’mon… join me!
When you get down from the hill, head to Stevenson or Rooster Rock or Dalton Point for some east wind sailing. As of last night, today was looking fantastic, but early morning gradients are pretty darn weak. Given this disappointing differential, I'm going to downgrade the forecast. We'll see low to mid twenties at Stevenson and Rooster by this afternoon. The good news is that the wind will hold out until evening.
After you ski or snowboard and then windsurf or kite, head to downtown Hood River for First Friday! As always, there will be plenty of art and plenty of socializing.

Unfortunately, the wind forecast is questionable for the weekend. Saturday brings light wind and light rain. A front crosses the Gorge Saturday night, bringing frontal winds and chilly temperatures on Sunday. Desert winds Sunday will be in the mid to upper twenties, but it’s going to be gusty.
It is May 1st, and that's the official last frost date for Hood River. However, you're not supposed to plant tomatoes until the snow is gone from Mt. Defiance. We're not even close to seeing that snow gone, so you are taking chances if you toss everything into the garden now. But then again, if you're reading this forecast, you like living on the edge. Go for it. Plant away!
