Happy Solstice!

Today is the shortest day of the year. From now on, we'll have more light every day. That's something to cheer for, and I need something to cheer for right now.

NOAA had forecast 1-2 feet in the Gorge last night, but we only got a few inches at best. What a letdown! Dave Brown and I had plans for another round of secret local backcountry skiing, and now that's not going to happen.

Conditions on the mountain are not good either. That warm tropical air slid over the top of the arctic air last night. When the warm drops fell through the cold air, they became freezing rain, ruining all the nice powder.

For the weather geeks among you, it's 31 at Meadows and 11 in Hood River at 7am. That's one hell of an inversion. Given that temperature gradient, you'd expect the wind to be blowing like hell straight up. =) The east gradient (at .30 right now) is still drawing cold air into the Gorge and eastern Portland, where it's freezing rain hell. Believe it or not, the gradient is backing off. It was .40 last night, the biggest I've seen. NOAA's Rooster sensor was reading 25 last night, and that translates to 60 or so on the water.

I have to figure out what to do today. Tough one. Maybe clean that house I was supposed to clean Friday?

Have a good one!
