kill the messenger (Tuesday)

Good morning gorge sports addicts! Yesterday’s dark, gloomy, almost windless performance by Mother Nature crushed my gentle spirit. I imagine many of you were crushed as well, as summerlike weather gave way to inversion-like gloom.

Speaking of gloom, we’ll see  rain starting this evening. That’s not a bad thing if you’re a mountain biker or paddler. Our trails are desperately in need of moisture and our rivers are running low. With an inch or more of rain on the way tomorrow, trails and rivers will be in great shape by Thursday.

The wind forecast is looking difficult again today. At least thunderstorms won’t be around to keep gradients from driving wind on the water. A huge low pressure system off the Coast keeps significant gradients from developing today. We’ll still see 15-18 in the morning, and gusty 21-25 from Rowena to Maryhill this afternoon. If you’re a speedsailor or port-tack wave genius, head to the coast for gale-force southerly winds.

Tomorrow’s winds are difficult to call. Rain falls as the winter-like upper level low crosses the state. Best chance of decent winds will be way out east way late. Thursday looks a bit better, as clouds clear and high pressure builds in from the coast.

If you’re looking for something fun to do tomorrow night, check out Squrl’s free street party in Hood River. The downright awesome Austin band, Carolyn Wonderland, plays at the Horse and Hound on Oak Street in Hood River starting at 7pm.
