Saturday/Sunday Forecast

Hello sailors!

Today (Saturday) is the first of the Halcyon days, the fourteen days surrounding the winter solstice. The halcyon is a type of kingfisher that builds its nest on the surface of the ocean. According to Greek mythology, the bird charms the winds and waves so that seas remain unusually calm during its nesting season, a week before and after the solstice

The kingfisher isn't doing its job in Oregon. Read on.

Mother Nature's serving up a delicious Sunday brunch of wind. If you're not watching the Seahawks cream the Panthers at 10am, you may want to consider a bit of windsurfing or kiteboarding.

Washington's secret speedsailing site (Chinook) will be serving winds in the 40-60 range, making for 40-knot-plus speedsailing runs. Stevenson's menu features light easterlies... just strong enough for kiteboarding.

Even Seattle gets in on the brunch spirit; sailable conditions will be had in the rainy city tomorrow. With the Seahawks game being played out of town, traffic to Alki and other windsurfing beaches should be light (I have zero idea what traffic to beaches has to do with Seahawks football).

And that's about it for tonight. (Yes, I'm doing the Sunday forecast on Saturday... I'm thinking of heading out to Chinook in the morning if the roads are open, and I'd hate to get up before 6am)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Temira
