Saturday 11/24 Forecast

Good morning sailors!

I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving!

Cheers to those of you (Laura, for one) who hit the water yesterday! I had to be at the restaurant early, a huge downer considering that I have two brand new sails needing testing!

East winds have faded today, as the supporting high pressure shifted far to the east. We're now awaiting the approach of a frontal system. This will kill the east gradients and most likely bring light west winds. Westerlies will be short-lived, as another high builds over the PNW. Winds will turn easterly again tomorrow, building into the upper twenties to low thirties as the day goes on.

A strong front approaches Monday, bringing heavy snow (hear the cheers from skiers?) to the mountains. It will be interesting to see what happens in the Gorge. With strong east winds and cold air in Hood River on Sunday, we may just see freezing rain or snow Sunday night or Monday morning. If that happens, join me for sledding on 7th Street. Please bring a skiing/snowboarding helmet and any other protective gear you think necessary. Speeds in excess of 35 mph are common on this hill (especially if we get a good ice storm), and the only way to stop is to jump off!

See you on the water Sunday!

Temira

Back in the late 70's, I lived on Eugene Street near 7th, and often wondered how in the world people who lived on that steep of a street managed to get to and from their houses during snow and ice events. Park on a side street, I guess, or have studded double chained tires with a hoist in the front to secure to a post somewhere.

I did see numerous folks sled wildly down that slope over the years and it looked like great fun especially if one's health insurance is good and they live and breathe adrenaline.

Great ongoing job on your interpretation of the weather models, Temira. You're right on most of the time for our microclimates here.

As of right now, Sunday morning, the precip appears to be arriving a little later on Monday, but it still likely could be as ice or snow in Hood River, since the inversion loves to hang on in Hood River longer than any other area in the Gorge.
