Tuesday East Wind Madness

Good Morning Sailors,

Stevenson is beating all models this morning, with an unexpected 30+mph showing in the east wind category. With gradients at .19, it's worth heading that way to catch some 3.2-3.7 conditions. If you want to sail, go now, as winds are expected to shift from easterly to westerly by tonight, suggesting weakening winds as the day goes on. Current conditions are driven by a near-hurricane-strength low cruising up the Eastern Pacific about 500 miles offshore. With the center of the low at 962 millibars, and Stevenson at 1000mb, no wonder it's blowing so hard. The only surprise is that I didn't see it coming yesterday! It looks like the coast will only get a 4-5 hour window of strong wind this afternoon. Anh called from the beach yesterday to say, "The waves are huge, bigger than I've ever seen them!" So, if you're up for psycho-madness sailing (I am, but am working), head to the coast!

As the offshore storm moves north, a front approaches the Cascade Crest. Western Oregon gradients reverse, turning winds westerly in overnight. With the frontal passage, sleepy-time winds hit the low to mid-twenties, irritating light sleepers. Behind the front tomorrow, Gorge winds blow in the gusty 22-26 range, with rain showers possible in the unstable air behind the actual front.

Thursday brings high pressure and clearing to Eastern Oregon. Winds flip-flop again, setting up a 25-29 east wind event.

I have a couple of P.S.A's today:

1. Richard Hallman, extreme sports photographer extraordinaire, presents his slideshow "Endless Summer 2007" at Dog River on Friday at 8pm. This is the best place to get in your last ooohs and aaaahs seeing fantastic images from this season!

2. For the mountain bikers out there: There is a cleanup party from 9am-11am tomorrow morning at Post Canyon. Meet at the trailmap at the bottom of Post Canyon Road. Bring gloves and clippers if you have them. I believe snacks will be provided. Help out with the trail - you know you'll be using it sometime in the next few months!

If you're heading to Stevenson (wish I was, but I'm working), have a fantastic time ripping it up on the small gear! If not, have a fantastic day doing whatever you've got planned!

p.s. I hear the windsurfing's been quite good in Denmark.   =)
